• UCCA’s Street Signs Project Needs You!

    October 5, 2023
  • Hurricane Ian left its mark on our beloved island, including our street signs. Thanks to the relentless efforts of UCCA Vice President Paula Garrett over the past 9 months, we now have quality, durable signs ready to be installed. Not only are these signs designed to withstand our island’s unique conditions, but their reflectiveness will also aid our fire department during the dark of night.

We’re gearing up for our installation event on Thursday October 19th and Friday, October 20th. From digging post holes to mixing concrete and supply distribution, there’s a role for everyone willing to lend a hand. If you’re available and eager to help, please Sign Up.

This important project does carry costs, presently at over $15,000. If physical volunteering isn’t feasible for you, consider supporting the initiative financially through a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, plays a part in enhancing our island’s infrastructure.  You may donate with or without volunteering by filling out the form by clicking here.

Together, we can ensure North Captiva remains safe and easily navigable for everyone, especially in emergencies. Join us in this community-driven endeavor.

Hello, do you have a 3-point auger for the Kubota? I have one on my tractor and make digging post holes super easy. I think I got mine from tractor supply - https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/country-pro-3-point-post-hole-digger-ytl-019-033 . I can put it on and operate if you decide to go this route. I'm also available to help in other ways if labor is needed. P-

    * Is this really the best time to install the new signs? There's still a lot of major construction going on with large equipment delivering materials and hauling away debris on a daily basis. I've seen some form of property damage every week. The turns off the side roads are particularly vulnerable. We also have LCEC currently replacing the entire electric grid. * Are there any specifications as to where the signs are to be placed? I know many of the existing signs have been knocked over, or moved for more clearance. I think some form of a uniform layout would be beneficial to everyone. * Are the signs easily replaceable should they be damaged, or would there be manufacturing delays and additional costs to only produce a few? * I agree we need the new signs, however, I strongly believe we should not install at the present time. I appreciate the time and effort put into this project. Just my thoughts. I would think some form of a uniform layout would be beneficial to everyone.

    Both will work

I agree whole heartedly with Ed Dotts. This is not a good time to install with all the debris clean up, construction still going on and LCEC infrastructure work. Also, it would make more sense to install in the winter when there is less rain, not as hot, and more people on the island to help.
